Architectural turbulence (2023)
Architectural Turbulence is an ongoing photo project that explores the environment of Soviet architectural heritage through somatic practices. The author raises key questions: How does architecture affect bodily sensations and our self-determination in society? Is it possible to convey these processes and connections through photography?
After participating in several dance laboratories in urban spaces, Jane Efremova began exploring these questions by documenting performative practices. Having researched the locations and historical context of Soviet architectural heritage, she invited performers with diverse backgrounds to participate. The intermediate phase of the project included laboratories, individual sessions in various cities, and a series of postcards with instructions for engaging with architecture.
The shooting began in the autumn of 2021, but the context shifted drastically a few months later. New questions emerged: How does the body feel under restrictions, in conditions where speech is constrained? How does it maintain a connection to a place? In many ways, this project became a personal protest for the author—a form of resistance against that which cannot be openly discussed.
