Architectural turbulence (2021 — ongoing)

«Architectural Turbulence» is an ongoing photo project that explores environment of the Soviet architectural heritage through somatic practices. The main questions the author raises are: does architecture affect bodily sensations and our self-determination in society? Is it possible to show these processes and connections through photography?

After participating in several dance laboratories in urban spaces, Jane Efremova began to explore these questions through the fixation of performative practices.

Having explored the places and historical context of the Soviet architectural heritage, she invited performers with different backgrounds to participate. The intermediate (performative) phase of the project included laboratories with the artist Nu Simakina and individual sessions in different cities. Together we prepared instructions for bodily interaction with architecture and distributed a series of postcards with the instructions printed on the back side. So far more than 10 performers have taken part in the project, and locations in Moscow and St. Petersburg have been explored.

The shooting started in the autumn of 2021, but a few months later the context changed drastically. Other questions crept in between the lines: how does a body feel in restrictions, in conditions where you can't speak? How does it feel connected to a place? In a way, this project became a personal protest of the author, a form of resistance to what we cannot speak about.
