One-on-one (2018)
The «One-on-one» project explores the theme of closeness and boundaries in any kind of relationship. It was realised as an exhibition at the FFTN gallery in Saint Petersburg. The photo series, that was shot by methods of spontaneous documentation of reality, metaphors and allusions, was developed into a performative multidisciplinary offline project.
The location of the exhibition was a hidden gallery space in the center of St. Petersburg about 2 by 2 meters, that could accommodate no more than five people at a time. After the opening the viewers could get inside by contacting the author as she had the key. While they entered the space, Jane stood in the corner and suggested to listen to her personal story in the headphones. Their eyes met while listening as there was a mirror on the opposite wall. The reaction was different — someone thanked and hugged each other, someone left with no words to say. It was also possible to leave a note on the black wall and convey the idea of closeness. Someone left such notes as: «intimacy is a personal project», «closeness is when the look vibrates with a taut string». Someone drew two points at equal distance from each other. By involving into the process the viewers became participants of the exhibition. The audience was able to be one-on-one with themselves and the author by making (or not) intimate contact.
By using methods of documentation of the surrounding reality, performative acts, deep presence, interaction with the viewer and working with space Jane created an opportunity to talk about the topic.
