One-on-one (2018)
The One-on-One project explores themes of closeness and boundaries in various types of relationships. Initially presented as an exhibition at FFTN Gallery in Saint Petersburg, the photo series — created through spontaneous documentation of reality, metaphors, and allusions — evolved into a multidisciplinary, performative offline project.
The exhibition was held in a hidden gallery space in the center of St. Petersburg, measuring approximately 2 by 2 meters and accommodating no more than five people at a time. After the opening, visitors could enter the space only by contacting the artist, as she held the key. Inside, Jane stood in a corner, offering visitors headphones to listen to her personal story. Their eyes met through a mirror on the opposite wall while they listened. Reactions varied—some thanked her with a hug, while others left without words.
Visitors could also leave notes on the black walls, contributing their thoughts on intimacy and connection. Messages included phrases like: Intimacy is a personal project and Closeness is when the gaze vibrates like a taut string. One person drew two dots equidistant from each other. By participating in this way, visitors became active contributors to the exhibition, engaging with the themes of closeness and introspection.
Through the use of reality documentation, performative acts, deep presence, interaction with the audience, and thoughtful spatial design, Jane created a platform to explore and discuss these profound themes.
